Exercise Program Design
Training Program Design
Designing a high quality training program to meet your exact needs take more than simply throwing together a list of exercises. You or your coach will need to take a wide variety of factors into account. Pre-made training programs online will not be personalised to your needs and in some situation may be dangerous. Step one of exercise program design is “Needs Analysis”.
Physiology
What are the physiological needs of the individual ? Does the athlete need to focus on anaerobic or aerobic capacity ? Does the individual need both ? If so then how much of each ? The more questions asked the more specific this aspect of training can be. When a coach does not ask these questions you are at risk of failing to progress towards your goals.
Movement and Biomechanics
An exercise program design not taking the movements used in sport or everyday life into account will be doomed to fail. Training the wrong movement will not move you towards your sporting, fitness or lifestyle goals.
Individual Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths and weaknesses are at the core of every individual. Discovering those weaknesses often involves additional testing. FMS Testing is an example of additional testing.
Design Exercise Program to use the available equipment
Designing a training or exercise program without having the equipment available is counter productive. A program written for an athlete with only minimal workout equipment will be useless if the program requires a fully equipped gym.
Health and Injury concerns
Intense exercise and existing injury don’t mix well. Injuries and health concerns dictate which exercises can used in a safe way. Injury prevention and injury rehab are factors to consider in program design.
